Abstract
Most polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) compensation systems rely on many f eedback parameters that contribute to complexity, instability, and speed li mitations. We demonstrate a method that quickly and accurately determines t he principal states of polarization of a fiber afflicted with PMD, This inf ormation can be used in a feedforward configuration, thereby reducing the n umber of feedback parameters in a complete compensation system.
