In 1991, AWWA established the nonprofit international development organizat
ion WATER For PEOPLE (WFP) with the mission of improving lives worldwide th
rough drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene projects. Since then, nearly
400 WFP projects have been completed, benefiting rural and urban communitie
s in 38 developing and transitioning countries. To be eligible, projects mu
st address critical needs, use appropriate technology and local materials,
and be sustainable by the community. To facilitate projects and make the mo
st of limited funding and resources, WFP partners with indigenous private i
nstitutions, public agencies, and nongovernmental organizations. As WFP ent
ers a new century, the organization is evolving to meet the changing needs
of communities acid investing more in education, training, and basic skills
to help people help themselves.
