Abstract
In 1991, AWWA established the nonprofit international development organizat ion WATER For PEOPLE (WFP) with the mission of improving lives worldwide th rough drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene projects. Since then, nearly 400 WFP projects have been completed, benefiting rural and urban communitie s in 38 developing and transitioning countries. To be eligible, projects mu st address critical needs, use appropriate technology and local materials, and be sustainable by the community. To facilitate projects and make the mo st of limited funding and resources, WFP partners with indigenous private i nstitutions, public agencies, and nongovernmental organizations. As WFP ent ers a new century, the organization is evolving to meet the changing needs of communities acid investing more in education, training, and basic skills to help people help themselves.
