A novel and simple synthetic method for the preparation of aragonite whiske
rs has been developed, whereby aqueous solutions of CaCl2 and Na2CO3 are co
mbined in the presence of a suitable surfactant, poly(ethylene glycol)-20 0
00 (abbreviated as PEG), under ambient reaction conditions. The whiskers ha
ve high aspect ratios ranging from 20 to 80 with diameters in the range 0.5
0-1 mum. They were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmi
ssion electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (F
TIR) and Raman spectroscopy. The formation of aragonite whiskers is due to
the soft template effect of PEG.
