This paper discusses the effect of ion assistance on the operating characte
ristics of optical coatings made from PbF2, BiF3, YF3, MgF2, ZnS, ZnSe, Ge,
and a number of combinations of these materials. It is shown that ion assi
stance is an effective technology that makes it possible to improve the ope
rating characteristics of the overwhelming majority of optical coatings and
broadens the possibilities of thin-film technology. (C) 2001 The Optical S
