Due to its easy applicability, lack of invasiveness, and high yield of info
rmation, ultrasound performed by the experienced examiner has become an ind
ispensable diagnostic tool in many areas of clinical pediatrics. This is re
flected by the large numbers of ultrasound studies both in pediatric privat
e practice and in children's hospitals. Therefore, quality standards and qu
ality control are of paramount importance. For many clinical problems, ultr
asound has led to new diagnostic and even therapeutic concepts. In the Germ
an-speaking countries, ultrasound has officially been established as a scre
ening method for the hip, but in clinical practice also for other organ sys
tems. Due to technological developments of the last few years, the diagnost
ic yield has significantly been improved, and new areas of application have
been established.
