Abstract
An overlooked error source in the differential equation approach for l ocating a fault on a transmission line is investigated. Due to the use of difference equations in the expansion of the differential equation , a mismatch results between the different transfer functions in the f requency domain that are applied to different terms in the same equati on, causing an error in the final fault location estimate. This error source is identified and its effect on the fault location estimate is shown through numerical simulation. A criterion is proposed for improv ing the difference approximation.
