Dw. Visser et al., Planned measurement of particle branching ratios of astrophysically interesting states in Mg-22, NUCL PHYS A, 688(1-2), 2001, pp. 456C-458C
In order to measure the particle branching ratios for the decay of states i
n Mg-22 of possible astrophysical interest, we are currently constructing a
"lampshade" array of silicon strip detectors. They will work in coincidenc
e with our Enge magnetic spectrometer and focal plane detector to detect pr
oton or alpha decay of particular Mg-22 states. In x-ray bursts, the Ne-18(
alpha, p)Na-21 reaction is a pathway from the hot CNO cycle to explosive hy
drogen burning. In novae, the rate of Na-21(p, gamma)Mg-22 relative to Na-2
1 beta (+) decay will constrain models when combined with the detection of
Na-22 by the next generation of orbiting gamma -detectors. We will extract
branching ratios that will yield the resonance strengths that can contribut
e to these reaction rates.
