We have applied laser calorimetry to the measurement of optical absorption
in mono-crystalline sapphire at cryogenic temperatures. Sapphire is a promi
sing candidate for the mirror substrates of the large-scale cryogenic gravi
tational wave telescope, The optical absorption coefficients of different s
apphire samples at a wavelength of 1.064 mum at 5 K were found to average 9
0 ppm/cm. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
