New mixed transition and alkali metal sulfides ACuZnS(2) (A = K, Rb) and Ba
KCu3ZnS4 with ThCr2Si2 structure were synthesized by the sulfidation of mix
tures of stoichiometric quantities of alkali and alkaline-earth metal carbo
nates, copper metal, and zinc oxide, and their electric and magnetic proper
ties were studied. According to the results of resistivity measurements, ne
w compounds are semiconductors with a room-temperature resistivity of rho (
RT) similar to 10(-2) Omega cm. The temperature dependence of magnetic susc
eptibility shows a temperature-independent paramagnetic behavior in the cas
e of ACuZnS(2) (A = K, Rb) and a Curie-type behavior in the case of BaKCu3Z
nS4.
