A new method for synthesizing dirhodium(II) tetraacetate is developed. The
method is based on reduction of Rh(III) chloride by dimethylformamide in th
e presence of dimethylammonium acetate. The procedures of preparing dirhodi
um(II) tetraacetate as an adduct with water or methanol, as well as without
axial ligands, are described. The crystal structure of [Rh-2(CH3COO)(4)Cl-
2][(CH3)(2)NH2](2) is determined. The centrosymmetric binuclear dianions ha
ve a lantern shape. The chlorine atoms occupy axial positions. The characte
r of Rh-Cl bonding depends on the participation of the chlorine atoms in in
terionic cation-anion interaction.
