SPECTROCHIMICA ACTA PART A-MOLECULAR AND BIOMOLECULAR SPECTROSCOPY
Ethylene carbonate (EC) and water solution compositions ranging from pure w
ater to 60 mass% EC have been examined using infrared (attenuated total ref
lection) spectroscopy. The fundamental vibrational modes of EC in the mid-i
nfrared between 2050 and 1000 cm(-1) were fitted to mixed Lorentzian-Gaussi
an bandshapes. The spectral data for EC bands between 1000 and 650 cm(-1) a
re also shown but were not curve-fitted due to baseline distortions from wa
ter librational modes. The results of the band analysis have provided infor
mation regarding the molecular structure of these solutions, and the fact t
hat the structure is also concentration dependent. The Fermi resonance coup
ling between the v(2) and 2v(7), vibrations of EC have been analysed using
a standard perturbation model. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights re
