We report the anisotropical optical response of highly oriented poly(p-phen
ylene-vinylene) (PPV). The polarization of the main transitions detected in
the electronic spectra is discussed with particular emphasis for the band
at about 4.7 eV. Moreover, the comparison of the reflectance, transmittance
and imaginary part of the dielectric constant spectra allows to locate at
about 2.2 eV the onset of the absorption for very long conjugated chains.
