Abstract
The FTIR spectra of the three title compounds and of their partially d euterated analogues were recorded at both room and liquid-nitrogen tem perature. As a consequence of the Jahn-Teller effect, the bands in the OH stretching region of the spectrum of Cu(BS)(2) . 6H(2)O (BS = benz enesulphonate) are broad and split into at least two components which appear at somewhat higher and lower frequencies than the corresponding bands in the spectra of the cobalt and nickel compounds, indicating b oth weaker and stronger hydrogen bonding in the former case. The stron ger hydrogen bonds are formed by the water molecules equatorially coor dinated to Cu2+ ions. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.
