We evaluate the lifetimes of the surface and the first image state of the (
1 1 1) surface of gold, the image state having the peculiarity of being a r
esonant state. The sell-energy of the excited quasiparticle is calculated w
ithin the GW approximation. A one-dimensional potential is used to obtain t
he single-particle wave functions by solving the Schrodinger equation. The
screened Coulomb interaction is calculated using the RPA approximation for
the response function. Our computed linewidths are in very good agreement w
ith available STM and two-photon photoemission experimental results. (C) 20
