This paper deals with the identification of cracks in rotors. The proc
edures employed are based on the extended Kalman filter (EKF), and the
instrumental variables (IV) method. It shows how a modal EKF (MOKF) s
uitable for application to systems with a large number of dofs can be
designed. A combination of the EKF and the IV-method is also presented
. The feasibility of the procedures to detect cracks in rotors is prov
ed by two examples. First, the crack depth of a simulated rotor is cal
culated. Then, the procedures are applied to a rotor test rig in order
to determine the crack depth.
