A simple model was developed to account for the generation of thin space-ch
arge gratings induced by bandgap illumination in photorefractive crystals.
It includes the high-intensity regime where the contribution of free carrie
rs to the space-charge field cannot be neglected. The model was specificall
y applied to explain the occurrence of two mutually pi -phase-shifted grati
ngs below the surface of KNbO3 as well as diffraction features that have be
en previously observed experimentally.
