Abstract
Wild-type bacteriorhodopsin (bR) and of bR reconstituted with a retinal ana log (bR5.12) were investigated with respect to their fluorescence propertie s. The latter is locked in an all-trans configuration due to the five-membe red ring spanning the C12-C13=C14 bonds (see structures). The large similar ity found in the spectra confirms very clearly that I-460, the fluorescent state of bR, is all-trans and that structural changes faster than torsion a re responsible for its formation.
