The keys to an aesthetically successful mandible reconstruction are accurat
e shaping of the mandible reconstruction plate, accurate alignment of the b
one, and maintenance of the lower border of the mandible. If only the mandi
ble and overlying soft tissue are missing, the patient can expect an excell
ent aesthetic outcome. If the defect is massive with a lot of soft tissue m
issing, an aesthetically pleasing outcome is more difficult to obtain. In t
his article, the techniques required to obtain a good, functional cosmetic
result are reviewed.
