Abstract
This study examines the nature, quantity and method of disposal of domestic and commercial solid waste in the Gobichettipalayam block of Erode distric t in Tamil Nadu. Based on a sample survey, the study reveals that, in urban areas, there is a large-scale generation of domestic solid waste, as compa red to the rural areas. The quantum of solid waste released is directly rel ated to the level of household income, family size and level of education. On account of poor disposal methods, health problems are more severe in urb an, than in rural areas. With regard to commercial waste, it is inferred th at industries release large quantities of solid waste, in comparison to oth er type of activities. The present modes of disposal by the hospitals, hote ls and markets are not safe and satisfactory. The disposal activities of Go bi Municipality lags far behind the total quantity of wastes generated, lea ving about 2,322 tonnes of garbage unattended to every year. Therefore, eff ective and efficient solid waste management is of paramount importance for the maintenance of health, environmental protection and natural resource ma nagement.
