One hundred and eighty-eight first-time attenders at a genitourinary (GU) c
linic were monitored to establish who returned following discharge after tr
eatment. Thirty-six (19%) returned within 2 years with a new infection. The
re-attenders did not differ significantly from the rest of the cohort by a
ge, gender or occupation, nor did they differ in their sexual history and p
sychological variables. Reattenders were significantly more likely to have
consulted their general practitioner (GP) in the 6 months prior to their fi
rst clinic attendance.
