Abstract
The implementation of new process routes involving accelerated cooling dire ctly following rolling is allowing steelmakers to react rapidly to market d emands. Advances achieved in the heavy plate mill of Dillinger Huttenwerke are reported, where enhanced cooling technology coupled with improved proce ss control have permitted remarkable material property combinations (high s trength and excellent toughness combined with low carbon equivalent) to be obtained. Combining this facility with high precision position control has led to the development of a sophisticated trial tool (the ATP process) that allows final cooling parameters to be optimised cost effectively. Case stu dies involving the industrial application of this technology are presented. (C) 2001 loM Communications Ltd.
