The implementation of new process routes involving accelerated cooling dire
ctly following rolling is allowing steelmakers to react rapidly to market d
emands. Advances achieved in the heavy plate mill of Dillinger Huttenwerke
are reported, where enhanced cooling technology coupled with improved proce
ss control have permitted remarkable material property combinations (high s
trength and excellent toughness combined with low carbon equivalent) to be
obtained. Combining this facility with high precision position control has
led to the development of a sophisticated trial tool (the ATP process) that
allows final cooling parameters to be optimised cost effectively. Case stu
dies involving the industrial application of this technology are presented.
