Cyclodextrins are currently under investigation for their utility as drug d
elivery agents. One property of the parent cyclic oligosaccharides which re
quires further modification for advanced drug delivery applications is that
of site-directing capability. We have utilized beta -cyclodextrin as a sta
rting material for the synthesis of the GM(3) trisaccharide and have conjug
ated this targeting ligand to a derivative of the parent beta -cyclodextrin
. Synthesis of this cyclodextrin derivative, namely 18, is presented.
