K. Yamaura et al., Synthesis, crystal structure, and magnetic and electric properties of the cross-linked chain cobalt oxychloride Ba5Co5ClO13, J SOL ST CH, 158(2), 2001, pp. 175-179
The cross-linked chain cobalt oxychloride Ba5Co5ClO13 is reported. Single c
rystals were obtained by a flux method with BaCl2. A hexagonal unit cell (P
6(3)/mmc, a = 5.6980(8) Angstrom and c = 24.469(5) Angstrom) was found. The
+ 3 and + 4 valence cobalt ions were formally distributed into octahedral
and tetrahedral sites coordinated by oxide ions. The compound was electrica
lly insulating with a gap of 0.25 eV along the chain. Antiferromagnetism wa
s found, with substantial ferromagnetic character, suggesting that the magn
etic ground state is complex. (C) 2001 Academic Press.
