The ultrasonic compressional (V-1) and shear velocities (V-s) of cadmium su
bstituted manganese ferrites have been measured with the ultrasonic pulse t
ransmission technique. The values of the Young's modulus, rigidity modulus,
Debye temperatures and average sound velocities have been computed from th
e experimental values of V-1 and V-s. The elastic moduli of the specimens a
re corrected to zero porosity using Hasseleman and Fulrath's formulae. The
variation of elastic moduli with composition is interpreted in terms of bin
ding forces between the atoms of the spinel lattice. (C) 2001 Elsevier Scie
