We present a study of a synthetic Fe-substituted calcium silicate hydr
ate (CSH), a constituent of cement paste, using Fe-57 Mossbauer spectr
oscopy and magnetic measurements. The observed behaviour is characteri
stic of antiferromagnetic nanometric particles undergoing superparamag
netic fluctuations. The relevance of these findings with respect to th
e understanding of CSH crystal structure and microstructure is discuss
ed briefly.
