Abstract
The neutron monitor developed by Simpson (Phys, Rev. 73 (1948) 1389) has be en widely used to measure the intensity of cosmic rays. However, the detect ion efficiency of the neutron monitor has never been calibrated using an ac celerator beam, This paper gives the first results of measurements of the d etection efficiency of the neutron monitor using the accelerator beam at RC NP, Osaka University. The experimental data reproduce both the early predic tion by Hatton and the recent calculation by Clem surprisingly well, (C) 20 01 Elsevier Science B,V. All rights reserved.
