Experiments have been performed to investigate the possibilities of using n
eutron transmission measurements to determine water content of geological s
andstone samples. A beam of 14 MeV neutrons produced by a neutron generator
was attenuated by different samples of sandstone and subsequently detected
with plastic scintillators. Each sample was saturated with water and the d
ifference in neutron attenuation between dry and wet sample was compared wi
th the water content determined by mass balance of the sample. The measurem
ents were found to be in good agreement with Monte Carlo calculations using
MCNP. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
