Abstract
The design, construction, and performance of a hexagonal-nose-cone-shaped p lastic scintillation counter system is described. This "Start Counter" is u sed as part of the trigger and to measure event start times for photon beam running with CLAS in Hall B at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator F acility. The Start Counter is constructed of three 3-mm thick coupled-paddl e scintillators and achieves a software-corrected time resolution of 260 ps . Each coupled-paddle scintillator operated without appreciable sagging up to similar to 1.2 MHz rate. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reser ved.
