Photoluminescence spectra of a bulk single crystal of Yb-doped CuInS2 have
been investigated in a high magnetic field up to 25 T. Sharp luminescence p
eaks are assigned to the intra-4f-shell transitions of Yb3+. A crystal-fiel
d level diagram has been proposed from the peak energy of the spectra. Thes
e peaks are found to split into several peaks on applying magnetic field du
e to the Zeeman effect. The splitting of peaks increases linearly to the fi
eld up to 20 T, and deviates from the linearity above 20T, which is interpr
eted as a result of mixing between the crystal-field levels. (C) 2001 Elsev
