Abstract
The discovery of high-temperature superconductors (HTS) in 1987 opened new opportunities in the design of several power supply equipment. The advantag es of a transformer with HTS windings have been discussed and represented i n several papers in the past, The design of transformers depends on the ope ration requirements and the position in the power network. In this paper th e fundamental equations for the design of transformers are discussed and mo dified in such a way that an optimisation of HTS transformers can be succes sfully studied. The best design for low volume and low losses is calculated for different transformer categories (50, 150, 300 MV A) considering the i mpedance voltage and the price for the HTS windings, The resulted growth la ws are discussed and analysed.
