Abstract
By model quantum calculations we show that the Stern-Gerlach effect can occ ur for a one dimensional electron gas. We propose the spin filter device ba sed upon this effect and describe fabrication of prototype hybrid ferromagn et-semiconductor microstructures. From the low-temperature transport measur ements we derive necessary conditions which must be satisfied in order to d etect the spin filtering. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserve d.
