An. Zelenetskii et al., Deformation and disintegration of solid polypropylene particles during their mechanochemical modification, POLYM SCI A, 43(5), 2001, pp. 542-548
The effect of a mechanochemical modification of PP with maleic anhydride, m
aleic acid, and sodium maleate on the character of the deformation and disi
ntegration of PP particles was studied by scanning electron microscopy. It
was shown that the deformation and disintegration processes start from fine
PP particles to spread to bigger ones as the duration and intensity of mec
hanochemical modification of PP increase. In this case, changes in the morp
hology and structure of PP particles are accompanied by an increase in the
specific surface area, especially, at the final stage. Grafting a comonomer
onto the polymer occurs via their joint deformation in all the particles p
resent both at their surface and in the bulk.
