Abstract
Termites were studied in the Shimba Hills, Kenya. More than 25 species were collected in forest remnants or small forest islands. 41% are soil feeders , 37% are fungus growers, and 22% are wood feeders. The termite fauna in sm all forest islands is similar to the termite fauna of the forest remnants. Although the forest islands were very small we found a significant species area curve. The fauna of the forest islands is significantly nested in corr elation to island size. Thus the termite fauna of a forest island is an ord ered subset of that of the larger forest remnants.
