"Moonie" is one of the most successful piezoelectric hydrophone transducers
. The design of the moonie transducer was modified in order to use shear st
ress in PZT ceramics. Composite structure "shear-moonie" was simulated by t
he finite element method and the effective piezoelectric coefficient was es
timated. Hydrostatic measurement were performed on a prototype sample trans
ducer. Due to the complicated transfer of the hydrostatic pressure to the s
hear stress, "shear-moonie" has a performance much lower than that of conve
ntional "moonie".
