Slow transit constipation is a clinical syndrome characterized by constipat
ion and delayed colonic transit and is probably attributable to ineffective
colonic propulsion. This syndrome may be associated with pelvic floor dysf
unction. Although the etiology is unclear, there are fewer colonic nerve fi
bers and interstitial cells of Cajal in patients with slow transit constipa
tion. The symptoms are managed medically; surgery is reserved for patients
with colonic inertia who do not have pelvic floor dysfunction.
