This paper reports on a small scale investigation into the way lecturi
ng staff at a well established, medium-sized English university percei
ve their role in relation to the two main functions of teaching and re
search. Results are discussed in relation to three Faculty Boards and
some attempt is made to establish the source of factors which influenc
e personal perceptions.
