H. Deere et al., Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma of the parotid gland: a case report andreview of the cytological and histological features, J LARYNG OT, 115(5), 2001, pp. 434-436
Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma (EMC) is a rare biphasic tumour of the s
alivary glands typically arising in the parotid. Fine needle aspiration cyt
ology is widely used in the initial investigation of salivary gland swellin
gs and whilst the cytological features of this tumour have been described t
hey are not well recognized. This report describes the clinicopathological
features of a case of epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma of the parotid gla
nd and highlights the importance of awareness of this tumour in the differe
ntial diagnosis of biphasic tumours on fine needle aspiration cytology.
