Lung salvage and protection ventilatory techniques

This article reviews the current management strategies for the treatment of acute hypoxic respiratory failure. These include inhaled nitric oxide, exo genous surfactant therapy, high-frequency ventilation, permissive hypercapn ia, and prone position ventilation. The place of extracorporeal membrane ox ygenation in the event of the failure of these therapies is discussed.
