The surface impedance offered to an external field by a highly absorbing we
dge is determined. Over most of a side the impedance is effectively constan
t having the same value as if the side were an infinite plane interface. Ne
ar the edge, however, this is no longer true. Within a wavelength or so of
the edge the impedance exhibits fluctuations and can depart quite widely fr
om its constant value elsewhere. The large alteration to the phase as the p
osition of the external excitation varies is particularly interesting.
