In the present paper we propose a reaction mechanism which explains the for
mation of the reaction products identified at the azibenzyl thermolysis. Th
e main reaction product, diphenylketene is an unstable compound which gener
ates a radical species with thermal stability. The diphenylketene resulted
from azibenzyl decomposition is involved in subsequent processes. Final rea
ction products in which disphenylketene is involved ha ve been identified u
sing electronic and IR spectra.
