D. Kirby, Anglican-Orthodox relations and the religious rehabilitation of the Sovietregime during the Second-World-War, REV HIST EC, 96(1-2), 2001, pp. 101-123
The ambiguities and difficulties of church-state relations in wartime are e
xplored through the negotiations that took place about the institutional ro
le of the churches between the Foreign Office, the Ministry of Information
and the leadership of the Church of England during the Second World War. Co
ncerns about political exploitation of the churches, and the extent to whic
h the Church of England was implicated in politics and propaganda, are illu
strated by examining some aspects of the use made by the Ministry of Inform
ation of Anglican relations with the Orthodox churches. Special attention i
s given to an Anglican delegation led by the Archbishop of York to the Russ
ian Orthodox Church in 1943.
