Abstract
The reduction of a diphenyl alpha -iminoketone with samarium diiodide has b een studied. A fast two-electron transfer gives a samarium (Z)-enamidolate, which is protonated to afford an alpha -aminoketone or reacted with a vari ety of ketones to furnish pyrrole derivatives.
