Cultured mammalian cell mutants defective in the biosynthesis of membr
ane phospholipids, although limited in number, are increasing our unde
rstanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the biogenesis and th
e biological significance of membrane phospholipids in higher eukaryot
es. This review summarizes the progress in the isolation and character
ization of such mutants, focusing on those isolated from cultured Chin
ese hamster ovary (CHO) cells.
