Results from degenerate four wave mixing (DECVM) and laser induced flu
orescence (LIF) of pyrazine and pyridazine are presented The DFWM spec
trum of pyrazine from a supersonic jet reflected faithfully the absorp
tion probability, while the LIF spectrum was complicated by rotation-d
ependent intersystem crossing. The low fluorescence yield of pyridazin
e prohibited direct LIF measurements, but its DFWM spectrum was in goo
d agreement with previous absorption spectra. DFWM is an absorption ba
sed technique, so it is ideal for high resolution absorption spectrosc
opy studies when the upper state: dynamics are unfavorable for LIF det
ection. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.
