Abstract
The oxidative polymerisations of 2,6-dimethylphenol with copper-(1-methylim idazole) complexes as the catalyst precursor compounds in different solvent s showed the catalysts to be extremely active when using acetonitrile. Acet onitrile can act as a labile ligand for copper and also prevent the catalys t to become poisoned due to hydrolysis. Addition of increasing amounts of w ater leads to a progressive deactivation of the catalyst. (C) 2001 Publishe d by Elsevier Science Ltd.
