10 Gb/s single channel soliton transmission over more than 10000 km in a st
andard communication fiber with distributed Raman amplification has been de
monstrated in a recirculating fiber loop setup. It has been found that the
Gordon-Haus timing jitter becomes the main limiting factor, provided that t
he generation of dispersive waves due to polarization mode dispersion has b
een minimized by adjusting the polarization state of the signal.
