Abstract
Crystalline slab optical waveguides of a calcium aluminosilicate (Ca2Al2SiO 7) were prepared by surface crystallization of a glass with close compositi on, upon heat treatment after an ultrasonic surface treatment (UST). Single mode and multimode waveguides were obtained, by controlling the depth of th e waveguides with both varying heat treatment temperature and time. The ref ractive index and optical propagation loss of the slab waveguides was also characterized.
