The objective of this study is to address the replacement of up to 30 parts
of EPDM with SBR to reduce the cost of finished products and to improve se
lected blend properties using more efficient cure systems. Effects of sulfu
r, peroxide, and coagent curing systems on blend properties were studied. I
t was found that the addition of a small amounts of sulfur as a coagent to
the peroxide cure system in EPDM/SBR compounds remarkably improved mechanic
al properties of the blends, Important compound properties including: mecha
nical properties, compression set, heat aging, and ozone resistance of the
EPDM/SBR blends are also compared with those of EPDM compounds.
