S. Forman et P. Zachar, Cross-cultural adjustment of international officers during professional military education in the United States, MIL PSYCHOL, 13(2), 2001, pp. 117-128
In this study, we investigate the relation between personality traits and c
ross-cultural adjustment using international military officers participatin
g in a I year military training program in the United States. Unlike previo
us research, we used an instrument designed to measure a universal represen
tation of trait structures: the 5-Factor Model of personality (Costa & McCr
ae, 1992). The U-Curve Model (Lysgaard, 1955) of cross-cultural adjustment
is also opposed in this study against the Business Sojourner Model (Furnham
& Bochner, 1986). Results fail to support the U-Curve Model and provide so
me support for the influence of personality traits. Moreover, results clear
ly support an understanding of the cross-cultural adjustment of internation
al military officers in the United States within the framework of Business
Sojourner Model.
