The recent demonstration that the axonal transport motors kinesin and dynei
n participate in axonal transport of neurofilaments (NFs), and that the ass
ociation of NFs with these motors is regulated by phosphorylation provides
new insight into several aspects of axonal transport and NF biology. This r
eview juxtaposes older and more recent findings on NF dynamics, and specula
tes on the organization of axonal NFs as suggested by real-time analyses of
NF transport.
